Maroondah Basketball Club is celebrating its 50th year of operation in 2019. Our Club started in 1969 as Croydon West High School Basketball Club in the Eastern Districts Junior Basketball Association (E.D.J.B.A.), but officially changed it's name to Maroondah High School Basketball Club on the 28th March 1972. Subsequently, this was changed upon incorporation as an Association on the 6th May 1985 to Maroondah Basketball Club Inc.
The establishment of the school-based Club was supported by the School Principals of the early 1970's including Mr A Douglas and Mr Harry Fletcher. Important families involvedin the initial running of the Club, included the Jensen's, Mrs Van Os, the Neweys, the Corrs, the Grants, the Cummings and Mr G Fletcher.
In those days, players had to travel to play teams such as Vermont, Bulleen-Templestowe, Eltham, Boronia, Wattle Park and Nunawading. Detailed manual records of player's scores were kept and grades and age groups for both boys and girls were from Under 10 to Under 18 inclusive. Detailed manual records of singlet numbers and uniform sizes are included in the original records, together with Committee meeting minutes, results, season summaries and confirmation of the weekly player contribution being 10c each!
Fundraising efforts included a Bessemer Party, sausage sizzles and attendance at the school Fete - how we have moved on!
Our Club has now grown to having between 115 to 130 teams each season and reportedly upon good authority, being the biggest domestic-only basketball club in Australia. We continue to encourage young girls and boys to take up basketball as a sport, by running clinics at local schools, encouraging responsible persons to take on coaching and co-ordinating many basketball-related activities for our members throughout each season, such as Presentation Day's, attendance by WNBL (Bulleen Boomers) and NBL (Melbourne United) clubs to encourage boys and girls, give advice and actually run training sessions for our children; Coaches nights and Super Sunday clinics.
In celebration of our achievement, we are offering to our parents the opportunity to pay their Summer 2019/20 season registration fees at a discounted rate - that is, $50 for our 50th year. If fees are paid by midnight on the 6th October 2019, you will be able to pay a discounted fee of $50 per child. More information on this to come shortly.
New players are always welcome. Please note that if a player has not played with Maroondah Magic, then they need to contact the age co-ordinator to check for availablity of playing spots within each age group. Age co-ordinators details can be foundhere.
Our club has a number of regular events where we could really use some additional help. Uniform sale day (held twice a year just before the beginning of each season), Presentation Day (twice a year, early in the season), Grand Final day (we need volunteers who are experienced scorers and
would be willing to score for other Magic teams) and Come and Try Sessions (held on Friday evenings late in each season to recruit new players for the next season).
Our committee devote a lot of time to make these events happen but as our club grows we would love to have some more help. If you could give up a few hours please email your details to Teali (Club Secretary) firstname.lastname@example.org and Teali will keep a list of people we can call on to help out at these events.
